Funeral services are this morning (11 am) for the Wayzata Police Officer struck and killed on Highway 12 last week. (MNN’s) Scott Peterson has the details. Thousands of law enforcement officers from around the state and country are expected to join family, friends and the public in saying goodbye to Officer William Mathews at Wayzata Free Church. Mathews began his career as a Peace Officer in 1998 and joined the Wayzata Department in 2008. The 47-year-old leaves behind a wife and seven-year-old son. A procession will carry Mathews by horse-drawn caisson to Summit Park Cemetery, and the State Patrol will conduct a fly-over, followed by a “last call” in honor of Officer Mathews. A memorial fund has been set up in Officer Mathews’ name at Wells-Fargo Wayzata. 54-year-old Beth Freeman from Mound is charged in Mathews’ death. Prosecutors say Freeman was on her cell phone and under the influence of drugs when she struck and killed Mathews, who was clearing debris from Highway 12.
