The one-day special session is already off to a rocky start. Governor Walz called a one-day special session for lawmakers to wrap up the state’s two-year $48 billion budget. And this morning, ahead of the House floor session, House Speaker Melissa Hortman said: “it is a typical courtesy of the minority to vote to suspend the rules in a special session to allow the bills to be taken up in a timely fashion .” But House Minority Leader Kurt Daudt made clear there was no agreement to suspend the rules and added: “Our members have made reasonable requests, and we think it’s reasonable that we just get to read the bills and understand the bills and comprehend what’s in them.” Without suspension of the rules, the one-day session would likely stretch to at least three. The Senate, with a DFL minority, voted to suspend the rules on its first bill up for a vote–the ag bill, which passed unanimously.
