Twelve jurors have now been seated in the trial of Derek Chauvin. The city of Minneapolis’ settlement with the family of George Floyd continues to loom over jury selection. One juror who was seated today said she’d seen news of the $27 million settlement and told the judge she believes she can remain impartial and added “I want to consider all sides, I know I’ve turned off the radio, or television, changed the channels when any news stories come…but I don’t know how it…I’m doing my best to avoid it.” Publicity around the settlement has been a key issue prompting the dismissal of several jurors and potential jurors who admitted they could not remain impartial knowing about it. Also as a result of settlement publicity, the defense is asking Judge Cahill to delay and move the trial. The judge says he’ll make an announcement on that tomorrow. And he’ll make an announcement on whether or not to allow evidence from George Floyd’s May 2019 arrest into the trial as well.
