(St. Paul, MN) — Governor Mark Dayton, concerned about increased oil-train traffic from Willmar through downtown Minneapolis, is asking the president and C-E-O of Burlington Northern Santa Fe to take extra measures. In a letter to BNSF’s Carl Ice, the governor asks the railroad to issue a public statement that the re-routing is temporary, and put more non-oil traffic on the route so oil trains can stay on existing routes. Dayton is also asking BNSF not to run oil trains under Target Field during events and make sure that safety measures are at the same level as on other oil-train routes. A spokeswoman says BNSF will be talking directly with the governor about his concerns.
