A judge in Grand Marais has found 1980 “Miracle on Ice” Olympic hockey gold-medalist Mark Pavelich incompetent to stand trial on charges that he assaulted a friend. The Star Tribune reports the case against 61-year-old Pavelich from Lutsen is suspended while authorities ask to have him committed for treatment. Prosecutors say Pavelich struck 63-year-old James Miller with a metal pole, claiming he’d spiked his beer. The victim suffered cracked ribs, a bruised kidney and a fracture to one of his vertebrae.
