The 2019 Minnesota Legislature convenes one week from today in Saint Paul. Minnesota will have a new governor, Democrat Tim Walz, who will be sworn in next Monday. Democrats take control of the Minnesota House but Republicans retain a majority — albeit only one vote — in the state Senate. The top task is the next two-year state budget, a job that will take a number of months. Incoming Governor Walz wants a gas tax increase — something Republicans strongly oppose. Also expect vigorous and extended debate over health care. Walz wants to move toward single-payer. Republicans contend free-market competition is the only way to reduce health care costs.
