How should Congress oversee ag mergers? — that was one question for 6th District U-S House candidates at Tuesday’s forum at Farmfest. Republican incumbent Tom Emmer points to government regulation, and also banking regulations. Emmer says, “We’ve got to allow an environment to exist where the small producer, the small supplier, everybody in the economic food chain can survive.” Democratic challenger David Snyder responds small farmers are suffering from regulations designed for large farms. Calling for a return to Democratic control of the U-S House, Snyder says “we need to get [7th District Congressman] Collin Peterson back as chair of the Agriculture Committee, so that the farmers working with him and with the Democrats are able to write these regulations that help the small farmer, instead of helping the big, large Wall Street farmers.”
