(Duluth, MN) — The Diocese of Duluth has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after a court ruling last month holding it partially reponsible in a priest sex abuse case from 1978. Sixty percent of the 8.4-million-dollar award to the victim must be paid by the Diocese. Church officials say after attempts at reaching a mutually agreeable resolution failed, they were left with no choice but to file for bankruptcy. They say it ensures that resources of the Diocese can be shared justly with the victims, while allowing the day-to-day operation of the church to continue.
