The American Civil Liberties Union in Minnesota and ten other states has launched a free smartphone app that allows people to automatically record their interactions with law enforcement and submit the videos to the A-C-L-U if they feel their rights have been violated. Minnesota legal director Teresa Nelson says the app adds “another layer” to law enforcement accountability by empowering people to record and document their interactions with the police. Law enforcement leaders say they’re very troubled by a function on the app that alerts other subscribers to police incidents in progress. They say it could endanger the public, escalate situations or cause witnesses to “shut down” for fear of their identities being posted on social media.
