In the wake of two fatal officer-involved shootings in the metro Friday–one in north Minneapolis, one in Shakopee– activists are calling for accountability of police from elected officials. Activist Nekima Levy-Armstrong was among about a dozen or so people gathered outside Minneapolis city hall today who said of Mayor Jacob Frey “we have significant concerns about your leadership and your failure to hold Minneapolis police accountable. We’re sending a message to a city council that’s supposed to be more liberal and progressive: step up to the plate and do your part to hold killer cops accountable.” And Levy-Armstrong is calling on Governor-elect Tim Walz to address accountability in his new administration adding “this is not just an issue that impacts Minneapolis, it impacts the entire state of Minnesota.” The activists gathered today to announce plans for demonstrations and other events this week to mark the 3rd anniversary on November 15th of Jamar Clark’s death in north Minneapolis. The group plans to raise awareness about justice for victims of police violence and to promote community control of the police. Clark was shot in the head during an encounter with two officers and his death sparked weeks of protest and the occupation of the Fourth Precinct in Minneapolis near where Clark was shot. The officers were not charged in Clark’s death. Events set for this week include a public “speak out” at the Hennepin County Government Center tomorrow calling for the County Attorney to reopen the case. And a vigil is planned for Thursday at the site where Clark was killed.
