Native American and environmental activists gather in Duluth (noon) before seven of their members are arraigned this afternoon (Tues) on criminal trespassing charges for a November 2nd demonstration at Enbridge Energy’s office there. Thane Maxwell says they want full environmental review and consultation with tribal governments on any proposed pipeline expansions. “We’ve been playing by the rules for a long time, for several years now,” he says, “and the process is very flawed — it’s not working.” Maxwell’s group wants charges against protesters dropped. Enbridge says it recognizes the rights of people to express their views legally and peacefully, as long as those conversations are in the appropriate forum.
