Local anti-smoking advocates are applauding Plymouth’s decision this week to join three other Minnesota cities in raising the tobacco buying age to 21. Molly Moilanen with ClearWay Minnesota hopes it’s just the beginning and says “we would like to see it eventually passed at the state level, but it’s going to take local action, local leadership first to show that it can work and that it’s the right thing to do.” And Moilanen adds that she wants “kids from every city in Minnesota, every zip code to be covered by this life-saving policy.” Edina, Bloomington and St. Louis Park have also raised the tobacco age. Detroit Lakes and Hutchinson have voted “no” on raising the age. Opponents argue the decision should be made on the federal level, and not locally.
