>>HCMC Funding Passes in Omnibus Supplemental Budget Bill
(St. Paul, MN) – A package of bills has passed the Senate Health and Human Services Committee that includes funding to keep Hennepin County Medical Center open. The omnibus supplemental budget bill includes nearly $300 million dollars to stabilize HCMC and healthcare providers statewide. The bill also provides $70 million dollars for modernizing IT technology for County Human Services Departments and more than $10 million dollars to fight food insecurity. The bill passed with bipartisan support and is headed to the Senate Finance Committee.
>>Senate Committee Passes Bill for Property Tax Relief
(St. Paul, MN) – The Senate Tax Committee has passed a bill that would offer solutions to long-term property tax relief in Minnesota. The bill would establish a Property Tax Task Force with the mission to examine the current property tax system, identify what’s working and what’s not, and deliver recommendations to reduce the tax burden. The author, Senator Arik Putnam (DFL-St. Cloud) says Minnesota’s property tax system has not had a review in over 25 years, and this bill will take a look at the problems. The bill now moves to the Senate Tax Committee.
>>Governor Walz Heads to Spain
(St. Paul, MN) – Governor Tim Walz is on his way to Spain to attend a summit with other leaders. The governor will deliver a keynote address tomorrow at the Global Progressive Mobilization Summit in Barcelona. He will be joined by Spain’s Prime Minister and President along with progressive leaders from across the globe. Walz will also attend a meeting with other world leaders.
>>Anoka Inmate Sentenced for Assault in Jail
(Anoka, MN) – An Anoka County court has sentenced Jaylan Lavone Black to 18 months in prison for assaulting another inmate while they were both housed at the Anoka County Jail. Black pleaded guilty to third degree assault in the incident that happened in December, 2024. In the plea, Black admitted to punching the inmate in the face causing facial fractures. The case was investigated by the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by the attorney general’s office.
>>Grenade Found at Superior Business
(Superior, WI) – A scare for workers at a recycling business in Superior, Wisconsin. Employees found a grenade in a bin that had been dropped off at Simko Recycling. The grenade was placed in an area behind a concrete barrier and away from employees. The 148th Airbase Ordinance Disposal Office in Duluth and the Marathon County Bomb Squad were called to the scene. It was determined that the device was a training grenade used by the U.S. military for training purposes. The bomb squad removed the grenade from the scene.
>>Wisconsin Supreme Court Candidate Has Ties to Minnesota
(Undated) – A judge who has worked under Senator Amy Klobuchar has announced she will run for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Lyndsey Brunette has served as a Clark County Circuit Court judge since 2018. She announced her campaign Thursday for the seat held by conservative Justice Annette Ziegler who announced last month that she would be retiring. Brunette ran as a Democrat when elected Clark County District Attorney in 2012. Brunette previously worked under Amy Klobuchar at the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. She earned her law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul.
