(Mankato, MN) — Two children are the victims of a deadly duplex fire early this morning in Mankato. Police say two adults and three kids were in the apartment, and a man and one child escaped without injury. Mankato Public Safety said two children died in the fire, and a woman was airlifted to the HCMC Burn Center for treatment. Public Safety Director Jeremy Clifton says they are working to determine the cause. The occupants of the lower unit got out safely.

(St. Paul, MN) — Two men are injured, one critically, after a shooting in St. Paul on Sunday. Police responded to shots fired around 8:30 p.m. The two men were brought to Regions Hospital for treatment. One was shot in the head and shoulder, the other in the ankle. The man shot in the head is expected to survive. No arrests have been made. Anyone with information about the shooting should call the police.

(Winona, MN) — A former school bus driver is accused of sexually assaulting a student with disabilities eight years ago in southeastern Minnesota. Winona County prosecutors charged 53-year-old Timothy Wilkemeyer of Rushford with criminal sexual conduct with a child aged 16-17. The woman told law enforcement that Wilkemeyer sexually assaulted her several times in 2017. Court records show he admitted to having sexual contact with the girl but said that he believed she was 18.

(Winona, MN) — Authorities in Winona County are looking for a man who allegedly exposed himself to boaters. The sheriff’s office says a man reported he was on the Mississippi River with two juveniles Saturday evening when a man in a pontoon boat exposed his private parts. Deputies say they followed the man to the Minnesota City Boat Club, where the alleged victims and suspect got into a heated argument. Investigators have identified the alleged exposer but are still trying to locate him.

(Duluth, MN) — Duluth Fire is mourning the death of a retired firefighter. The department posted to Facebook today, saying Steve Swanson, who retired at 52 years old in May, passed away unexpectedly this weekend. Swanson gave fifteen years of service, working on 7 Engine, 4 Quint, 2 Engine, and 1 Tower. The department says, “His caring nature and thoughtfulness will be remembered for years to come, as his last wish was to provide others the gift of life through organ donation.”

(St. Paul, MN) – The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has fined two north metro companies for failure to control polluted runoff from flowing into a nearby wetland and the Crow River. The MPCA says Capstone Homes and Arnt Construction failed to submit and implement a stormwater pollution prevention plan during a residential construction project in 2024. Capstone was fined more than $18,000, and Arnt Construction was fined nearly $23,000. The MPCA says polluted runoff can cause excessive growth of weeds and algae in water bodies and reduce recreational opportunities like swimming and fishing.

(St. Paul, MN) — It wasn’t a record-setting day, but more than 184,000 (actually 184,176) people attended the Minnesota State Fair on Sunday. That is higher than the two previous first Sundays at the fair in 2023 and 2024. The record for this day was set back in 1994 when nearly 210,000(actually 209,969) attended the fair on that day. So far through four dates this year, more than 674,000 (actually 674,175) have attended the State Fair. The fair runs through next Monday, Labor Day.
