>>Minneapolis Police Identify Suspect in School Shooting

(Minneapolis) – Minneapolis police have identified the suspect in today’s shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis. Police say 23-year-old Robin Westman, formerly Robert Westman, from suburban Minneapolis opened fire while the children were attending mass. Police say Westman’s mother previously worked at the school and is now retired. Police say Westman had three guns and fired from the outside of the building through windows to the church. Two children, ages eight and ten, were killed. Seventeen others were injured. They include fourteen children and three parishioners in their 80’s. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara says Westman has no extensive criminal history and died from a self-inflicted gunshot. There will be a prayer service tonight at 7 p.m. at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield.

(Rochester, MN) – More lawmakers are reacting to the school shooting this morning that killed two students and injured 17 others in south Minneapolis. DFL Senator Liz Bolden issued the following statement saying, ” I am horrified by the shooting that took place in Minneapolis this morning. My heart breaks for the lives lost and families directly impacted by the violence.” She added, ” Our state has been rocked by several acts of targeted gun violence and assassinations this year. ‘Thoughts and prayers’ have not worked to solve a problem unique to our country, and they will never work.” Bolden is calling on elected officials to have the courage and sense to stand up to gun lobby and take action.

Governor Tim Walz has ordered all U.S. and Minnesota flags to fly at half-staff at all state buildings, immediately, in honor of the lives lost today at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis. A shooter fired into the school while children were holding mass marking the first week of school. Two children were killed and 17 others were injured. Fourteen of the injured were children. Governor Walz said, “Minnesota is heartbroken by the senseless shooting that took place this morning. I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence.” The governor encourages Minnesotans, businesses and organizations to lower their flags as well.

(Walker, MN) — Authorities in northern Minnesota are investigating the death of a boater on Leech Lake. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says the boat crashed into some rocks Tuesday afternoon and a 59-year-old woman was found unresponsive on board. First responders provided medical aid on shore, but she died on the way to the Walker airport. Deputies say the victim was the only occupant on the boat at the time.

(Bemidji, MN) — A Beltrami County sheriff’s deputy is recovering from injuries suffered in a crash Tuesday involving a stolen vehicle. Authorities tried to stop the suspect west of Bemidji, but he led patrol cars on a chase over gravel roads and snowmobile trails. The report says a deputy was traveling with his emergency lights on when the stolen vehicle struck the squad car head-on. The deputy was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later released. The suspect was also taken to the hospital and remains in custody.
