>>Burnsville Man Charged with Murder of Faribault Man at Park

(Burnsville, MN) — A Burnsville man was charged today with the second-degree intentional murder of 59-year-old David Chant of Faribault. Burnsville police responded to a call from Chant’s mother around 8:10 a.m. on May 3rd, who said she found her son unresponsive and unconscious at Interlachen Park. Officers found Chant and declared him dead. A search of the park turned up a bloody pair of shoes by a porta-potty, which was determined to be Chant’s blood through DNA testing. Later that morning, 21-year-old Michael Nhial’s mother called the police, saying her son was missing, and he had become increasingly aggressive at home and school. Police had been called there before. Surveillance footage showed Nhial walking around the underground garage to his apartment complex around 12:19 a.m. He was wearing shoes similar to the ones found at the park. Another video, around 1:43 a.m., captured audio from the park area. Two voices were heard arguing, then thumping noises, and finally, the slamming of a porta-potty door with one man repeatedly shouting, “Ow.” Chant’s autopsy determined his cause of death as homicide by blunt force trauma to the head. Nhial is currently being held at the Dakota County Jail on charges unrelated to the case. He was also recently civilly committed due to mental illness and is pending placement at an Anoka treatment facility.
