>>Man Fatally Shot in South Minneapolis Apartment

(Minneapolis, MN) – Minneapolis Police (MPD) are investigating after a man was shot and killed inside a south Minneapolis apartment building on Monday. Officers responded just before 10:45 p.m. to a report of gunfire. They found an adult man in a first-floor common area with a fatal gunshot wound. Investigators say an altercation inside the building escalated to gunfire. MPD canvassed the area, and forensic teams processed the scene for evidence. No arrests have been made.

 

>>Five Alleged Members of Minneapolis Gang Federally Charged in Drug-Trafficking Case

(Minneapolis, MN) – After federal prosecutors unsealed three indictments and two criminal complaints, five alleged members and associates of the South Minneapolis–based “Family Mob” gang face fentanyl and other drug-trafficking charges. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says agents, including multiple SWAT teams, carried out arrests and search warrants Tuesday morning. Prosecutors say the group distributed over 15 pounds of fentanyl since mid-2025 and operated in an open-air drug market, using force to push out competing dealers. Those charged include Silk Davis, 48, Minneapolis; Alexisus Mosby, 44, Bloomington; Kiron Williams, 43, Minneapolis; Rashshon Taggett, 44, Minneapolis; and Lakendrick Gilliam, 38, St. Paul. All face federal drug-trafficking penalties that could include up to life in prison.

 

>>Duluth Police Arrest Man on 1st-Degree Robbery Charges

(Duluth, MN) – A 22-year-old man is facing multiple pending charges after police say he threatened employees with a knife during a shoplifting incident on Wednesday. Officers were called around 11 a.m. to a business where employees reported that a man had stolen merchandise, displayed a knife, and then fled on a bicycle. Police located the suspect, identified as Brady Barney, a short time later. Officers say he was uncooperative during the arrest, and they recovered a knife and suspected fentanyl from him. Barney was booked into the St. Louis County Jail on pending charges of first-degree robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon, fleeing on foot, and fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance. The investigation is ongoing.

 

>>Omar’s State of the Union Guest Arrested During Trump’s Speech

(Washington, D.C.) – Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is speaking out about the arrest of her guest last night during the State of the Union address. The Minnesota Democrat said in a statement, “My guest, Aliya Rahman, stood up silently in the gallery during the president’s speech for a short period of time, part of which other guests were also standing. For that, she was forcibly removed, despite warning officers about her injured shoulders and ultimately charged with ‘Unlawful Conduct.” Rahman was treated at George Washington Hospital and booked at U.S. Capitol Police headquarters. A viral video from January 13th showed Rahman being pulled out of her car and arrested by ICE agents in Minneapolis.

 

>>Work Continues on OIG Bill in House

(St. Paul, MN) – After hitting roadblocks in two House committee hearings, talks continue over the Office of Inspector General bill to create an independent watchdog to oversee fraud in Minnesota. Despite the setbacks, the House author, Democrat Matt Norris of Blaine, says there is some progress, as “it’s still sitting there in State Government Committee and as soon as we’re able to get some language that everyone can agree on, we can get that moving on to the next committee stop.” The bill passed the Senate last year by a 60-7 vote, but the House has struggled to pass the legislation.

 

>>AG Ellison Calls for Passage of Fraud Bill

(St. Paul, MN) – Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, along with lawmakers, introduced an updated version of their Medical Assistance Protection Act (MAP). This would expand the AG office’s ability to investigate fraud in Medicaid. Ellison says both sides need to come together and keep politics out of fraud. He believes one of the issues in “protecting the public dollar is the politicization and partisanship.” The plan would increase the size of the fraud unit from 32 to 50 members at a cost of $1.2 million a year.

 

>>State Representative Throws Support to Mining in BWCA

(St. Paul, MN) – A Republican state Representative has thrown his support to the Congressional resolution to lift the mining ban in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). Representative Isaac Schultz of Elmdale Township sent a letter of support for the project addressed to members of the U.S. Senate. Schultz says the Duluth complex in northern Minnesota is home to the largest untapped copper-nickel deposit in the world, and would make our country less dependent on foreign materials. The Senate is expected to vote this week on the bill that would open the door for a Chilean mining company to begin drilling for copper near the Boundary Waters. Supporters of the BWCA are against the bill, saying it will destroy the habitat and wildlife.

 

>>Mayo Clinic in Rochester Ranked World’s Best Hospital for 2026

(Undated) – Newsweek has released its annual list of the World’s Best Hospitals, and Rochester’s Mayo Clinic has once again claimed the top spot. The global ranking, made in partnership with research firm Statista, is now in its eighth year and evaluates more than 2,500 hospitals across 32 countries. Hospitals are scored using four data categories: recommendations from medical professionals, hospital quality metrics, patient experience data, and patient-reported outcome measures. This year’s methodology placed expanded emphasis on quality indicators and added new countries, including the Philippines and Turkey. Following Mayo Clinic, the top five hospitals worldwide include Toronto General, Cleveland Clinic, Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
