The teen was taken into custody without incident and is being held at the Clay County Juvenile Detention Center for first-degree possession of a controlled substance. Investigators are still determining how he got the pills and whether any were distributed. Police estimate the street value of the drugs at more than 35 thousand dollars. >>U.S. House Passes Resolution Approval of Future Mining in the BWCA

(Undated) – The U.S. House of Representatives today voted 214 (Republicans) to 208 (Democrats) on a resolution to lift a 20-year ban on mining near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). The resolution introduced by Republican Representative Pete Stauber overturns a federal order signed in January 2023 that blocks copper mining on federal lands in Cook, Lake, and St. Louis counties. Stauber says it “sacrificed thousands of good-paying union jobs,” “billions of dollars of revenue for our schools,” and “our nation’s mineral security.” Democratic Congresswoman Kelly Morrison opposed the move, saying copper sulfide mining is the most toxic industry in America and is particularly ill-suited to water-rich environments because it acidifies the water and leaches heavy metals like arsenic, lead, and mercury into the waterway. The vote now goes to the Republican-led Senate for a vote.

The agency says making equipment changes without updating a permit can increase the risk of releasing air pollutants. Sheldahl has since submitted an updated equipment inventory, outlined plans to maintain that inventory going forward, and agreed to seek permit amendments before modifying equipment in the future. The MPCA says the case is now resolved following corrective actions.
