The lawmakers’ working groups continue finalizing their budget bills. Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy calls the work slow and steady. Realistically, Murphy says the earliest a special session could be called is the middle of next week. The deadline to avoid a government shutdown is June 30
>>Minneapolis Woman Sentenced to 51 Months in Prison for FOF Role
(Minneapolis, MN) — A Minneapolis woman sentenced to 51 months in prison must pay $5 million in restitution for her role in the Feeding Our Future fraud trial. Court documents say from December 2020 through January 2022, 63-year-old Sarah Nur helped defraud a federally funded child nutrition program of $250 million during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nur claimed to have served over 1.2 million meals to children from her business, S & S Catering, which received over $10 million in payment to do so. She then used the funds for personal benefit, such as commercial real estate. Nur pleaded guilty to one count each of wire fraud and money laundering on September 7th, 2023.

(Undated) — As temperatures stay slightly cooler this week, wildfire containment in northern Minnesota continues to progress. Officials report that over 12,000 acres of the Camp House Fire are 90% contained, compared to 73% yesterday (WED). The Jenkins Creek Fire containment crawls forward at 32% of the nearly 16,800 acres involved.

(Ottawa, ON) — U-S Senator Amy Klobuchar is traveling to Ottawa, Canada, as part of a bipartisan delegation. Klobuchar and four senators will meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney, other Canadian dignitaries, and business leaders. The Minnesota Democrat helped pass a Senate resolution in April to reverse the across-the-board tariffs on Canadian goods. Klobuchar says she looks forward to discussing how to strengthen our partnership and bolster our trade relationship with our neighbor.

(St. Paul, MN) — Indivisible Twin Cities and community members will rally outside the Minnesota Veterans Services Building today (THURS, 4-6 p.m.) to stand up for local veterans. Group leaders say veterans have been “disproportionately targeted by the Trump Administration’s layoffs, budget cuts, and cruel policies.” They state that veterans make up 6.5% of America’s adult population, nearly 30% are federal workers, and half of those 713,000 are disabled.

(Duluth, MN) — A man sustained non-life-threatening injuries to the neck, and another is in custody after a stabbing in Duluth this afternoon. Police responded to a stabbing report around 12:20 near Lake Avenue and Superior Street. The victim was brought to a local hospital, and the suspect, 37-year-old James Taylor Jr., faces charges of assault, property damage, and fleeing a police officer. The victim and suspect are known to each other.
