>>Clay County Man Convicted of Stolen Valor, $140K Fraud

(St. Paul, MN) – Today, a federal jury convicted a Clay County man for posing as a decorated U.S. Marine to steal more than $140,000 in veterans’ benefits. Prosecutors say 39-year-old Mikhail Wicker never served in the military but used forged discharge papers and fake medal certificates to claim honors like the Purple Heart and Prisoner of War Medal. He relied on those lies to obtain VA healthcare, disability, and education benefits. Wicker was found guilty of wire fraud, mail fraud, and fraudulent use of military medals. Sentencing will be scheduled later.

 

>>Clay County Jury Acquits Former Correctional Officer

(Moorhead, MN) – A Clay County jury has acquitted former correctional officer Chloe Nord of charges alleging a sexual relationship with an inmate. Nord faced two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct after prosecutors claimed she became romantically involved with the inmate between November and January. Investigators said Nord exchanged messages and letters, and the inmate alleged two sexual encounters. Nord denied physical contact but admitted communicating, saying she “fell under his spell.” The jury returned not guilty verdicts on Thursday after a three-day trial.

 

>>U of M, Fairview, M Physicians Resume Negotiations

(Minneapolis, MN) – The University of Minnesota, Fairview Health Services, and U of M Physicians are returning to mediation over a proposed 10-year partnership announced last week. Attorney General Keith Ellison will continue to oversee talks, noting “time is of the essence.” The deal, set to begin in 2027, would not change patient care locations, but the university previously called the agreement a “hostile takeover” of its medical school. Fairview says the deal is binding but will join time-limited discussions.

The bill would extend the same cap already in place for Medicare recipients under the Inflation Reduction Act. Supporters say the measure will save lives and prevent rationing of the lifesaving drug, which has forced some patients into bankruptcy or deadly cost-cutting. The proposal is backed by the American Diabetes Association.

(St. Paul, MN) – Attorney General Keith Ellison is warning consumers after Minnesota Rusco abruptly shut down on October 29th, leaving customers with unfinished home renovation projects and thousands of dollars in losses. The company, sold to a Texas-based private equity firm in 2022, filed for bankruptcy earlier this month after its parent company closed 16 subsidiaries nationwide. Ellison urges affected Minnesotans to preserve records, seek chargebacks or financing relief, and file complaints with his office. The case remains under review.

 

>>Minneota and Orono Win State Championships at Prep Bowl 43 

(Minneapolis, MN) – Two high school football teams have been crowned state champions so far today at Prep Bowl 43 at U-S Bank Stadium. Minneota topped Breckenridge 49-14 to win its fourth straight Class A championship. In the Class 4-A title game, Orono was able to hang on for a 21-14 victory over Kasson-Mantorville. Defending champion Jackson County Central is playing Goodhue this afternoon for the Class 2-A crown, and Edina takes on Moorhead tonight (Fri, 7 p.m.) for the Class 6-A championship. The 9-Man, Class 3-A, and 5-A title games are tomorrow in the Vikings’ stadium.
