(Minneapolis, MN) — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey will continue into a third term after defeating democratic socialist and Senator Omar Fateh in a ranked-choice election. Frey led with 42% of first-choice votes, followed by Fateh with 32%. After vote transfers, Frey secured a majority. Fateh had hoped to become the city’s first Somali-American and Muslim mayor. The race drew a record turnout, with 55% of registered voters casting ballots.

(St. Paul, MN) – Governor Tim Walz says he has no plans to call a special session on gun violence at this point because Republicans will still not even discuss an assault rifle ban. Some cities have come forward saying they would like the state’s approval to pass their own bans. Walz said today, “I think it makes more sense when the state does it, but I have always been hesitant about preemption. I think the cities know best, and we have businesses that are able to ban these firearms there. I am as committed as I’ve ever been.” This week, House Speaker and newly announced Republican candidate for governor Lisa Demuth said she has not gotten any updates on a possible special session from the governor in weeks.

(Hibbing, MN) — A man from Hoyt Lakes is facing second-degree murder charges for an alleged shooting Sunday morning in Hibbing. St. Louis County prosecutors say 30-year-old Daniel Dale fatally shot 24-year-old Parker Johnson in an apartment parking lot. Johnson was lying on the ground with gunshot wounds to the head and back, and paramedics were unable to save him. Witnesses told police Dale fired a gun three times outside the apartments. Officers say they found a shotgun near Johnson’s body and spent nine-millimeter cartridge casings on the ground.

(Lakeville, MN) — A Lakeville woman is charged with felony theft after allegedly misusing funds from two booster clubs. Dakota County prosecutors say 47-year-old Holly Flood served as treasurer for both organizations from 2019-2024. She allegedly stole $82,000, using the money for personal expenses and gambling. Records show Flood repaid about $30,000 to one club. Flood is scheduled to appear in court on December 9th in Hastings at 9 a.m..

(St. Paul, MN) — The U.S. Supreme Court today heard oral arguments in a major case led by Minnesota and 11 other states, challenging President Trump’s use of emergency powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose broad tariffs. Attorney General Keith Ellison issued the following statement: “My job is to help Minnesotans afford their lives, and Trump’s unlawful tariffs make that harder by raising prices on everything from food to cars. That’s why we took this fight to the Supreme Court…The Court was rightly skeptical of the President’s claim to unlimited tariff power under the guise of an ‘emergency.’ I’m cautiously optimistic they’ll rule these tariffs unlawful.” A ruling could come by the end of the year.

The First Lady will be joined by DFL Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, gun safety organizations, doctors, and survivors of gun violence on Thursday night in Rochester. Their focus will be to discuss gun violence prevention steps and how to keep Minnesota communities safe. Governor Walz attended the first town hall last month with former Arizona Congresswoman and shooting survivor Gabby Giffords in Waconia.

(St. Paul, MN) — Governor Tim Walz has ordered flags at half-staff across Minnesota in honor of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who died on November 3rd. Flags will remain lowered at all state buildings until sunset on the day of his burial, which has yet to be announced. Walz says Cheney devoted decades to public service and redefined the role of Vice President. Minnesotans are encouraged to lower their flags in remembrance.

Individuals and businesses interested in growing or processing industrial hemp in Minnesota next year can now apply online for a license. This license is required for anyone intending to cultivate or handle hemp in the state. First-time applicants and authorized representatives must also submit fingerprints and pass a criminal background check as part of the application process. (Undated) — We’re just days away from the start of Minnesota’s firearms deer hunting season. DNR (Department of Natural Resources) Commissioner Sarah Strommen says there’s no such thing as a successful hunt if it isn’t a safe hunt, so check deer stands, handle firearms safely, and wear blaze orange or pink. Strommen says it’s also important to brush up on regulations. Finally, there is now one statewide season, and there’s no longer an A season or a B season. More info can be found on the DNR’s website.

(Undated) – A new University of Minnesota study suggests that whole-fat dairy products could be good for your heart. U of M School of Public Health researcher Ethan Cannon says whole-fat dairy appears to protect against coronary artery calcification (CAC), noting people consuming more whole-fat dairy are less likely to have CAC presence 25 years later than those who consume less whole-fat dairy or low-fat dairy. Cannon says they surveyed 3,100 people in the mid-1980s and tracked their dairy consumption over 25 years.

(Unhdated) – The Minnesota Twins officially introduced Derek Shelton as their new manager yesterday. Shelton says he’s honored and humbled to be the team’s 15th manager, noting he “really feels like a member of Twins territory.” Shelton was a bench coach for the Twins in 2018 and 2019. He takes over for Rocco Baldelli, who was fired at the end of last season.
