Ellison, who authored the bill, says he’s never met someone who doesn’t want to pay off any debt owed, but it’s not fair when debt systems punish people for getting sick, making them choose between paying their debt or for essentials. He exasperated, “No one asks you to get sick; you didn’t ask to get sick! And no one applies for medical debt; it finds you when you are in a situation you probably did not foresee.” The new law stops the automatic transfer of medical debt to a patient’s spouse, prohibits medical debt from being reported to credit bureaus, bans providers from withholding necessary healthcare due to outstanding bills, and more.
