(Sherburne County, MN) — Authorities are investigating the death of a 54-year-old inmate found hanging in his cell at the Sherburne County Jail. Steven Scott Gordon of Curtice, Ohio, was found at 11:24 a.m. on Wednesday and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Officials say no foul play is suspected. The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office are handling the investigation.

 

>>Rochester Man Accused of Sexual Assault

(Rochester, MN) — A Rochester man on probation for child pornography is now facing sexual assault charges. The criminal complaint says 30-year-old Mohamad Kasim Rustem raped a woman he met on Tinder last month. The victim reported the assault to police on August 29th after seeking care at a local hospital. Investigators identified Rustem through payment records and surveillance footage and arrested him on Tuesday. His conditional bail is $75,000, and he is due back in court later this month.

 

>>Duluth Lawmakers Support Workers in University of Minnesota Strike

(St. Paul, MN) – The delegation of state lawmakers from Duluth is throwing its support behind the striking University of Minnesota workers. Monday, workers in the Minnesota system on all campuses started picketing. These workers include custodial, building and grounds maintenance, food service, and sanitation workers. The Duluth lawmakers say in a strong union state like Minnesota, university employees should not have to go on strike to secure fair wages and a contract they deserve. They urge the U of M administration to meet with these workers at the bargaining table.

 

>>Activists Call for Charges to Be Dropped Against Minneapolis Protester

(Minneapolis, MN) — Activists spoke outside the Minneapolis Federal Courthouse today, urging U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson to drop charges against a local artist and organizer. Isavela López faces felony assault charges after a June protest in Minneapolis, where local and federal agents, including ICE, did crowd control. The protest stemmed from a raid on two restaurants in the area. Supporters say Lopez was violently detained and is being targeted for speaking out. A rally is planned ahead of her next court hearing on September 29th.

 

>>Court Ruling Blocks Medicaid Use at Planned Parenthood

(Undated) — Planned Parenthood is challenging a recent court decision to block patients from using Medicaid at any of its centers nationwide. On Thursday, the First Circuit Court allowed the decision, which stems from a budget law signed by President Donald Trump in July. Planned Parenthood North Central States says it will continue serving all patients, regardless of insurance status, and warns the ruling could lead to serious public health impacts if upheld.

 

>>Tad Jude Announces Candidacy for Secretary of State

(St. Paul, MN) – Former district court judge and Republican leader Tad Jude has announced he’s running for Minnesota Secretary of State in the 2026 election. Jude says he would prioritize voter integrity, transparency, and public confidence in elections. Jude was elected to the Minnesota House at the age of 20 in 1972. He was the youngest Minnesota legislator in history. He served in both the House and Senate. Jude has been a district judge for the past 11 years.

>>MN Vikings QB McCarthy Celebrates Birth of Son

(Undated) – Minnesota Vikings Quarterback JJ MCCarthey and his fiancée are welcoming a baby boy. McCarthy left practice on Thursday to be with Katya Kuropas as she delivered their first child, Rome. Coach Kevin O’ Connell says it’s been cool to see McCarthy change after the birth, and that it’s “an awesome moment as a father myself to see his reaction to it and the best day of his life.” McCarthy was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for leading the Vikes to a comeback win at Chicago in his first career start.
