>>Woman Killed in Gilbert Crash Identified 

(Gilbert, MN) — Gilbert Police have identified the woman who died in a two-vehicle car crash Monday on the Iron Range. Police responded to the crash around 5:30 p.m. near an intersection of Highway 97 in Gilbert, just north of Ely Lake. 49-year-old Eliina Fuhr of Aurora, driving a Ram 1500 pickup, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, a man driving a Ford F250, was uninjured.

 

>>Man Dies in UTV Crash Near Moorhead

(Wolverton, MN) — A man is dead after a UTV rollover Friday near Wolverton, just south of Moorhead. The Wilkin County Sheriff’s Office says the UTV held five people. The driver, Carl Nord, was pronounced dead at the scene. The four passengers were unharmed. Officials say no one was wearing seatbelts, and alcohol was a factor.

 

>>Man Charged with 2nd-Degree Murder of Relative at Family Celebration in Brooklyn Park 

(Brooklyn Park, MN) — A 32-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder after fatally shooting a relative at a birthday celebration in Brooklyn Park. Police responded to the home around 6:30 Saturday night on reports of a shooting, finding 34-year-old Nichanon Kittikroekphon with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and back. He was brought to North Memorial Hospital, where he died Monday. Investigation shows the shooting happened at a family gathering when the suspect, Lue Chang, became angry with the Kittikroekphon and shot him several times at close range with children nearby. Family members tackled Chang and subdued him until police arrived.

 

>>Woman Accused in 2019 Kidnapping, Murder of Woman Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison

(Minneapolis, MN) — A woman who was sentenced to life in prison for her role in the murder of a real estate agent was re-sentenced today to 20 years in prison after having her conviction overturned in January. Police say 32-year-old Elsa Segura lured 28-year-old Monique Baugh to a fake Maple Grove home showing on New Year’s Eve 2019, where she was kidnapped, tortured, and killed by Segura and three men, including Segura’s then-boyfriend. The Minnesota Supreme Court overturned her sentence, citing that the prosecution failed to provide enough evidence and an error was made in jury instructions. Instead of having a new trial in October, in a new plea deal, Segura pleaded guilty to kidnapping to commit great bodily harm and to terrorize.

 

>>Florida Election Ballots with ‘Tom’ Walz as VP Candidate Re-Sent to Overseas Voters 

(Palm Beach, FL) — Election officials in Florida say 257 electronic ballots are being re-sent to overseas voters because Governor Tim Walz’s name was misspelled. The Palm Beach County supervisor said the ballots showed the Democratic candidate for vice president’s name as “Tom” Walz. The office learned about the error less than 18 hours after the Tom Walz ballots were sent last Friday. They blamed the ballot vendor for making a type change without authorization.

 

>>BEC Chooses Deer River Company to Remove Rapidan Dam Bridge

(Mankato, MN) — The Blue Earth County Board of Commissioners has chosen Hosier Worldwide of Deer River and its over $1.16 million bid to remove the County Road 9 bridge near the Rapidan Dam. This comes after this summer’s severe rain and flooding caused the Dam to fail. The Board decided to remove and replace the affected bridge and remove the Dam completely. The winning contractor out of seven bidders offered 14% higher than an engineer’s estimate of nearly $1 million.  The county hopes to remove the bridge before the end of spring 2025.

 

>>MDH Report Recommends Continued Investments in Telehealth

(St. Paul, MN) – A new report from the Minnesota Department of Health is recommending continued investments in telehealth services. Director of Health Services Research Pam Mink says MDH is making nine recommendations in total to “strengthen and continue to support policies that are helping make telehealth accessible while ensuring where it’s being offered is used in appropriate situations.” The recommendation is part of MDH’s final report to the Minnesota Legislature on the impact of the 2021 Minnesota Telehealth Act on private-sector health insurance.

 

>>Detached Grage Fire in Breckenridge 

(Breckenridge, MN) — A detached garage fire that spread to four houses in Breckenridge is under investigation. Police responded to a structure fire call and evacuated nearby residences. A large pine tree near the garage ignited, sending hot embers as far as four houses north, causing additional fires in yards and garages. A live electrical line above the garage broke and laid across a nearby alley, but public utilities made the line safe. No injuries were reported, and officials believe the cause of the fire was hot embers in a fire pit nearby that caught fire.

 

>>25-Year-old Cancer Survivor to be Named LLS 2024 Honored Hero

(Minneapolis, MN) – The Midwest region of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) has announced that 25-year-old Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, ALK+ survivor Sophia Rossini of Minneapolis will be the Honored Hero of its 2024 Light the Night event Thursday. Rossini was diagnosed on February 22nd, 2022, after several doctors turned her away for “exaggerating flu symptoms,” when in reality she says “the main tumor that I had was attached to my vocal cords. So, in addition to it being cancer and spreading and killing me, the tumor itself was stretching across my airway and, like, physically choking me.” Rossini finished her sixth and last round of BV-CHP chemotherapy on June 17th, 2022. Since its inception, LLS has invested over $1.7 billion in research in the search for cures and provides free patient assistance, support, and resources.
