(New Hope, MN) — A 13-year-old boy has drowned in New Hope. Hennepin County deputies responded to a report of a drowning around 7:15 Wednesday night at an apartment complex. The boy was found unresponsive and brought to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Video footage shows the boy getting into the pool on his own and staying underwater for 30 minutes before bystanders pulled him out and called 911.

(Minneapolis, MN) — A Minneapolis man faces third-degree murder charges for allegedly selling the drugs that killed a woman. Crystal police responded to a residence on October 14, 2023, for a medical emergency, finding a woman inside the home had died. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled her death by “mixed drug toxicity” with a high amount of cocaine in her blood. The victim’s husband told police his wife used prescribed medicine, marijuana, and narcotics but wanted something “stronger.” The husband bought cocaine and gave it to her without naming the dealer. The victim’s son was able to identify who the couple normally bought drugs from as 28-year-old Terrell Mitchem. The husband chose Mitchem out of a six-person photo lineup.

(Winona, MN) — A district judge has ruled no cameras will be allowed in the courtroom in Adam Fravel’s October murder trial. This comes after multiple media requests, to which the judge cited the denial as due to the alleged victim’s desire for privacy. Fravel’s trial will be on October 7 in Mankato, where he faces first- and second-degree murder charges in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Madeline Kingsbury of Winona, who went missing on March 31, 2023, and her body was found a few months later near Mabel.

 

>>Former Winnebago Mayor, Son’s Charges Dismissed for Growing Excessive Marijuana

(Winnebago, MN) — The former mayor of Winnebago and his son have had charges dismissed after allegedly growing too much marijuana. Scott Robertson and his son Jacob had their greenhouses, equipment, and organic materials seized in February. Faribault County Attorney Cameron Davis dismissed the charges on August 27, which is allowed without the court’s approval. All property will go back to the Robertsons.

(Minneapolis, MN) – U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Regional Director Michael Cabonargi will be in Minneapolis today to highlight lower healthcare costs for Minnesota seniors under the Biden-Harris administration. Cabonargi says, “Medicare covered; insulin is now capped at $35 a month. Starting on January 1, all Medicare Part D enrollees will have their out-of-pocket drug costs capped at $2,000 a year. Certain recommended, prevented vaccines are available for free.” Cabonargi says prescription drug price negotiations have lowered the cost of ten of the most widely used and most expensive drugs, ones used by an estimated 119,000 Minnesotans.

(Washington, D.C.) – Minnesota pig farmers are heading to Washington, D.C., to urge Congress to pass a farm bill. Lauren Servick with the Minnesota Pork Producers Association says, “Between now and the election, there’s only about two work weeks out in D.C., so we’ve had a good August recess of connecting with our elected officials. But the key message we’ll share with them when we see them out in D.C. now will be the need for a farm bill; we’ve been talking about it for a long time.” Servick says pork producers want the new farm bill to provide a federal solution for Proposition 12, invest in trade promotion programs, and support foreign animal disease preparedness and response efforts.

 

>>MDH Supports Massive Amount of Overdose Prevention Work Across MN

(Undated) – The Minnesota Department of Health has awarded over 55 grants totaling 24 million dollars to organizations statewide to help fund overdose prevention programs. MDH Dr. Catherine Diamond says, “In 2022, there were 1,384 overdose deaths. That’s an average of three Minnesotans dying each day from drug overdose.” Racial disparities in overdose mortality rates in Minnesota are notable. In 2022, American Indians and Alaska Natives were 10 times more likely to die of an overdose than whites. Black African Americans were almost four times more likely to die of an overdose than whites in Minnesota.

(St. Petersburg, FL) — The Minnesota Twins topped the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 this afternoon to earn a split of the four-game series at Tropicana Field. Twins starter Pablo Lopez allowed three runs over six-and-two-thirds innings and struck out nine batters for his 14th win of the season. Closer Jhoan Duran pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his 22nd save. Eddy Julien and Matt Wallner hit home runs for Minnesota. The Twins open a three-game series Friday night in Kansas City.

(Minneapolis, MN) — Three days before the NBNL Music Festival in North Loop is supposed to take place, organizers have announced it has been canceled. The NBNL website says there were a few contributing factors to the decision, but only a lack of ticket sales was mentioned. Festivalgoers who bought tickets will receive refunds within the week, and organizers say they’ll be back in 2025.
