All Mille Lacs Lake anglers will be able to fish walleye with live bait when the season opens Saturday, May 14th. DNR Fisheries Chief Don Pereira says anglers have mostly accepted the catch-and-release aspect of the walleye season, but had clear concerns about the live bait restriction. After a meeting yesterday, officials decided allowing live bait was the best move for anglers and stakeholders. Pereira says all other Mille Lacs regulations announced last month will remain in place, including the provision that requires all walleye caught to be immediately released. The new regulations come as the DNR is working to conserve young walleye and help re-build the walleye population in the lake.
