Two ice fishermen were rescued from the water in Lake Kabetogama Tuesday afternoon after an ATV went through the ice north of the Ash River Visitor Center. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department, 36 year old Jay Podpeskar from Britt was driving the ATV and was pulling 30 year old Robert Crowe in a sled when the ice gave way and both men entered the water. Voyageur Park Service employees witnessed the incident, fastened two canoes together and rescued the men from the lake. Crowe was taken to a hospital in International Falls for treatment and observation. This is the second ice related incident in two days and the sheriff’s office again reminds citizens to stay off lakes due to rapidly deteriorating ice conditions.
