The Minnesota Secretary of State’s website is accepting applications through next Monday from people who want to serve on a new council that will set salaries for state lawmakers. Legislative salaries used to be set by lawmakers themselves, but in the last election Minnesotans approved a constitutional amendment shifting that responsibility to a new Legislative Salary Council. It will have eight members appointed by the governor, one from each congressional district, half Republican and half Democrat. State elected officials, judges, state employees and lobbyists are not eligible. Eight additional members will be appointed by the chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. The deadline to apply is next Monday, December 5th.
