One week after he was indicted by a grand jury, 21-year-old Derek Hexum of Balaton pleaded guilty to murdering Jim and Cathy Hively of rural Russell. Hexum admitted to breaking into the Hively home last April, killing the elderly couple and setting their house on fire. In a court document, Hexum admitted he was treated for mental health issues in the past but said he was not ill recently. He says he knew what he was doing during the Hively murders and could not blame drugs or alcohol. Hexum will be sentenced to life without parole in May.
