In 2016, 73-thousand-800 people applied for handgun carry permits. Of those nearly 74-thousand, 71-thousand-156 permits were approved and issued. This is the highest number of permits issued in a single year since the legislature implemented firearms permit laws in 2003. Over the year 122 permits were suspended and 56 revoked. Minnesota law enforcement agencies reported that individuals with permits committed 1,495 crimes. More than 80-percent were DWI’s or other traffic offenses. The top five counties for five-year permits are Hennepin(8,729), Anoka(4,869), Dakota(4,705), Washington(4,355) and Ramsey(4,181). As of today, the total number of valid permits in the state is 265,728.
