Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, and Representatives Collin Peterson, Betty McCollum and Keith Ellison have introduced a bill to prevent young families facing catastrophic health events from having to make an unwanted choice. Those families are eligible for essential health services through Medicaid, but the Minnesota lawmakers say new federal rules might also force nearly 500 Minnesota families receiving benefits to split up their assets by getting an unwanted divorce. Senator Klobuchar says no Minnesota couple should have to choose between their hard-earned savings or their marriage. Senator Franken adds younger families facing a catastrophic health crisis should be able to continue living their lives, saving for their kids’ college and paying for their homes.
