Public schools, public universities and employers could not allow transgender access to restrooms and locker rooms, under a bill introduced by Republican lawmakers at the State Capitol. Saint Paul mother of three Jamie Knippel says schools are stealthily adding policies to mandate mixed-sex facilities when the law doesn’t require it. Knippel says she’s unwilling to put her daughter and sons in harm’s way and tell them to expect to relinquish their privacy and safety rights at the bathroom door, in order to “appease a small and misguided minority.” Governor Mark Dayton responds Republican lawmakers with the bill are pandering to their “rabid” base. Dayton says it’s “homophobic, and they wrap themselves in the Bible to pretend that there’s justification for it, and the Bible says, love thy neighbor as thyself.”
