Firecrackers and aerial fireworks would be legal in Minnesota except in the metro area, under a bill moving forward in the state Senate. Republican Jason Rarick from Pine City says for Greater Minnesota, it’s “very clear in the bill that a local jurisdiction has the ability to pass an ordinance to restrict the use — that they would not be allowed there if they felt it didn’t fit in.” But Richfield Fire Chief Wayne Kewitsch, representing a statewide coalition of fire-prevention groups, warns of increased injuries from mishaps. “This proposed legislation would legalize the recreational use of explosives,” he says.
Governor Tim Walz said Wednesday if a bill gets to his desk, he would “probably sign it.” Walz argues with people able to buy firecrackers and aerial fireworks in neighboring Wisconsin, it’s better to legalize them in Minnesota so they can be regulated.
