Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are waiting for Governor Mark Dayton to veto a tax-cut bill as promised — and then the question is, can anything still be done to avoid a mess next tax filing season, because Minnesota’s rules aren’t lined up with the new federal changes? House Democratic Minority Leader Melissa Hortman says one possibility is “where the Republicans set aside their desire to have permanent ongoing corporate tax cuts, and Democrats set aside their desire to have permanent ongoing tax cuts for working families” — so the legislature only deals with making income tax filing easier in 2019. But doing that would not only require agreement between Republicans and Democrats but also a special session, and Governor Mark Dayton has repeatedly said he will not call lawmakers back to Saint Paul.
