State health officials are keeping an eye on chickenpox this year–with a slight increase in reported cases. Over the last half-dozen years, Minnesota has seen an average of between 300 and 350 cases, but so far this year, there have been around 390 cases–the most since 2013.The state Health Department’s Cynthia Kenyon says the most recent outbreaks have been in Hennepin and Stearns County, but the increase in cases is occurring throughout the state–largely in charter and private schools with higher levels of kids who are not getting vaccinated. Kenyon says “a lot of people, especially parents of kids right now probably had chickenpox when they were children and so a lot of people think it’s a mild illness and on some level a right of passage for kids to get chickenpox, however it can be quite severe.”
