Officials of the Minnesota Historical Society have voted to re-hang six paintings of Civil War battles in the Governor’s Reception Room at the newly-renovated State Capitol, over objections of Governor Mark Dayton. The governor argued art displayed there should more completely depict Minnesota’s varied history, and accused Republicans of playing politics with the issue. Top GOP lawmakers said removing the paintings would be an insult to veterans. The governor said in a statement that he accepts the Historical Society’s decision.
