The Voyageurs National Park boat launch and all its campsites on Rainy Lake remain closed due to high water levels, as well as all back-country campsites in the entire park. Park spokeswoman Tawnya Schoewe says, “With the floating debris out there… you don’t even know what’s floating sometimes…. You can get to the site, but… the majority of the amenities — like the food lockers, the tent pad core sites, the fire rings, the docks — they’re all under water.”
Schoewe says water levels are expected to drop in southern sections of the park, but are still rising around Rainy Lake: “Crane Lake, Namakan, Sand Point, Kabetogema, and the Namakan Basin is receding — or should be receding this week according to NOAA Weather — and then Rainy [Lake Basin] is still increasing.” Schoewe says the extent of damage won’t be known until floodwaters recede.
