A key Democratic lawmaker and a coalition of law enforcement officials, prosecutors and defense attorneys say they have agreement on reducing sentences for certain low-level drug offenses in Minnesota while increasing penalties for drug dealers. A key question is whether the plan has broad support in the Republican-controlled House. Saint Louis Park Senator Ron Latz says his counterpart, Public Safety Committee Chairman Tony Cornish from Vernon Center, is “solidly on board with this compromise.” Cornish told the Pioneer Press, “If law enforcement is satisfied, I’m satisfied.” The objective is to reduce Minnesota’s burgeoning prison population and make treatment available to offenders with chemical addictions.
