A legislative commission has approved the Walz administration’s plans to spend pending federal grant money to build new veterans homes in Bemidji, Montevideo and Preston. In 2018 the legislature passed 32 million dollars in state funding. Together with local matching funds it brings the state’s contribution to just over one-third of the total cost. Senator Julie Rosen from Vernon Center says, “once the feds approve their share, we have a duty to get shovels in the ground as fast as possible.” She notes that currently there isn’t a veterans home within a hundred miles of either Preston, Montevideo or Bemidji.
