A conservative political analyst from the western U-S sees former Congresswoman Michele Bachmann as Republicans’ best bet in 2018 for the U-S Senate seat formerly held by Al Franken and now occupied by Tina Smith. Professor Jenna Ellis at Colorado Christian University says of candidates discussed so far, Bachmann has the most national name recognition because of her run for president. Ellis says, “She may generate more support nationally than other candidates would, and whether that ultimately impacts the voters in Minnesota will remain to be seen. But I could see her, out of all the names mentioned so far, getting the most support from the G-O-P and the R-N-C nationally.”
Ellis adds, “The R-N-C and the G-O-P would be wise to put their support behind her because she has that national recognition — and to replace a very firm liberal Democrat with a Republican conservative woman would certainly be an upset.” The race will likely generate substantial national attention and attract significant campaign contributions from outside Minnesota.
