County attorney says officer justified in killing suspect during hostage situation on Iron Range

January 10, 2019 By Bill Werner

Saint Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin says an officer was justified in fatally shooting a suspect during a hostage situation November 27th in Virginia on Minnesota’s Iron Range. Investigators say 41-year-old Scot Widmark entered a woman’s vehicle, then used a large knife to take a male passerby hostage, basically using him as a “human shield.” Prosecutors say Officer Nick Grivna tried for over a minute to de-escalate the situation, but when Widmark began swinging the knife toward the hostage, Grivna fired his rifle, striking Widmark in the head. County Attorney Rubin says Officer Grivna “displayed superb training, courage, restraint, compassion, and professionalism” and “probably saved an innocent citizen’s life.”
