Dayton glad U-S Supreme Court struck down Texas abortion clinic law

June 28, 2016 By Bill Werner

Gov. Mark Dayton

Governor Mark Dayton says he’s glad the U-S Supreme Court struck down a Texas law that required abortion clinics meet surgical-center standards — an issue that’s also come up at the Minnesota Legislature.  Dayton says, “When you look at the 4-4 split on a couple of other very significant matters in the last few weeks, the fact that this one did get a majority of the justices I think is very significant.”

The Supreme Court ruled there was no significant health issue the Texas law helped to cure and it instead “poses a substantial obstacle to women seeking abortions.” Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life spokesman Scott Fischbach responds the court reversed common-sense regulations which “ensure a degree of safety for women.”

The high court also said it will not consider an appeal from neighboring Wisconsin to reinstate laws similar to the one the justices struck down in Texas.
