“I will veto any bill that has vouchers attached to it,” Governor Mark Dayton told Republican lawmakers today. At issue is a proposed measure that would provide tax breaks for private school tuition. Dayton also says Republicans’ plan to pull funding away from pre-kindergarten programs is unacceptable. Republicans respond early learning programs targeted to at-risk students are more effective. Dayton fires back, “They’re gonna transfer the money for the first, is it one or maybe it’s two years, but then the money stops.” Funding for pre-kindergarten is one of the most contentious issues as Dayton and Republicans try to agree on the budget with under four weeks remaining in the legislative session.
