Just before Monday’s court hearing on Republicans’ lawsuit against Governor Mark Dayton, both sides are asking a judge to extend funding for the legislature 90 days, hoping to resolve differences over tax cuts and other controversial items. The governor vetoed funding for the House and Senate effective July 1st, trying to force Republicans to undo several tax cuts and other measures Dayton wasn’t happy with but signed into law last month as part of a budget agreement. Republicans sued, saying Dayton violates the state Constitution by shutting down one branch of government. Both sides say an extension from the court will ensure payments are made on the new Senate Office Building so the state’s credit rating isn’t hurt. Dayton says legislative staffers won’t be laid off. Republicans say the legislature can continue to represent Minnesotans.
