Dayton, legislative leaders trying again to revive bonding bill

June 21, 2016 By Bill Werner

Senate GOP Leader David Hann (R-Eden Prairie)

Governor Mark Dayton and legislative leaders are meeting behind closed doors, trying again to revive a bonding bill for state construction projects that died in the closing minutes of the legislative session one month ago. Senate Republican Leader David Hann says the governor wants additional spending, beyond what was agreed on earlier which he signed into law — and Hann says “it’s not gonna happen.”  Another area of major disagreement: Senate Democrats want to move ahead with Southwest Light Rail in the Twin Cities, while Republicans say no.

Democrats want a special session before July 4th, but Republicans say that’s unlikely.  Analysts say if there’s no special session before the Independence Day weekend, it probably will not happen because of summer vacations and the campaign season kicking in.
