Governor Mark Dayton says he’ll ask the legislature to approve six weeks of paid parental leave for all state employees. The governor’s announcement comes the day after a major report recommended all Minnesotans have paid family medical leave, financed by employee payroll deductions and employer contributions. Cam Winton with the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce asks, what about other options such as private insurance or a voluntary system? He says, “Instead the report goes right to recommending a system of government control.” House D-F-L Leader Paul Thissen responds, “The private sector and voluntary options have been the status quo forever, and they haven’t worked.” Thissen applauds employers who voluntarily provide paid family medical leave, but says too many other Minnesotans have been left behind.
