Dayton says he’ll veto tax cut bill, Repubs softening stance emergency education funding

May 16, 2018 By Bill Werner

Governor Mark Dayton says Thursday morning he’ll veto a tax cut bill that the Republican-controlled Minnesota Senate passed this afternoon.  Dayton says, “I hope they’ll agree to include my emergency school aid as part of their tax bill, and then we can negotiate the rest of it and they can pass something and I’ll sign it.”

Republican leaders appear to be softening their position on the governor’s request. Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka says,  “We’re trying to figure out, is there something that we can do to accomodate the governor. I don’t know that we’ll find a solution, but we’re gonna give it our best shot to try to do that.”  House Speaker Kurt Daudt says, “Is is totally off the table? I don’t know. That’s up to the members and we’re gonna have those conversations, but right now it literally doesn’t fit into the budget that we have.”
