Dayton sends letter to GOP leaders on what *not* to do in state budget

March 14, 2017 By Bill Werner

As Republicans get ready to unveil the broad outlines of their state budget plan, Governor Mark Dayton has sent legislative leaders a strongly-worded letter on what he won’t accept.  The governor says the state “is facing increasing needs… from a growing, changing and aging population” and if Republicans are going propose spending cuts, he will not accept a 10 percent across-the-board reduction and Republicans will need to clearly explain the programs and services they wish to cut. Dayton also warns Republicans not to exceed his 300-million-dollar number for tax cuts targeted to middle-income families, farmers and those with special needs, plus help for cities and counties. And the governor says in bold print in his letter, “I strongly disagree with providing tax breaks for our state’s wealthiest and corporations at the expense of working Minnesotans and families most in need.”
