Governor Mark Dayton says he is signing into law nine of what he terms so-called budget bills to avoid a bitter showdown in June before possible state government shutdown. Dayton is allowing a tax cut bill to become law without his signature, and says “legislative treachery” by Republicans in forcing his hand shatters trust built up over the legislative session. In retaliation, Dayton is line-item vetoing funding for the legislature’s operations beginning July 1st, and says he’ll call a special session to rectify it only if Republicans agree to eliminate tax breaks for tobacco and large corporations, an estate tax rollback, new teacher licensing provisions and a ban on drivers licenses for illegal immigrants. Republican leaders have not yet responded.
