Governor Mark Dayton is asking Republican leaders at the legislature to meet with him “in an effort to negotiate the differences, which remain outstanding from the last Legislative Session.” Hamline University analyst David Schultz predicts Republicans will proceed with their planned lawsuit against the governor, while at the same time agree to negotiations with him. Schultz says, “I don’t think they [Republicans] want to be in the position politically of looking like they’re not trying to negotiate,… but also, if they’ve already filed the lawsuit, they have some legal leverage because the governor can’t be sure what… the courts would do in terms of the lawsuit.” Republicans allege Dayton violated the constitution by vetoing funding for the legislature’s day-to-day operations. He said it will be restored only if they agree to five controversial measures Dayton compromised on, when he signed the state budget bills.
